How long after first IVF consultation can I expect to try to conceive and whats involved?

I have my first consultation regarding IVF on Tuesday. I was wondering what happens after that and how long til I can expect the first attempt of egg and sperm to be. Are we talking weeks or months??? Hope that makes sense.
